Terrorists kill Nigerian brigadier general
A Brigadier General has been killed by unidentified terrorists in an overnight assault on a military base in Benisheikh, about 75 kilometres from Maiduguri, Borno state capital, a development which was second killing of a high-ranking officer in five months.
Penpushing reports that the Kaga local government chairman Zannah Lawan Ajimi, confirmed the incident as sources added that the terrorists killed at least 18 soldiers and torched vehicles at a base
The council boss was quoted in an interview to have stated that unfortunately, the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General O.O. Braimah, lost his life, and in similar vein, two intelligence sources confirmed Braimah’s death
Penpushing further reports that Braimah’s death follows the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in November, who was the highest-ranking military official to die in the long-running conflict since 2021.
The second intelligence source said that the terrorists killed several troops and burnt vehicles and buildings before they withdrew, without giving a toll, while other source said the terrorists overran the brigade, giving the death toll as at least 18.
Penpushing also reports that the Defence Headquarters in response confirmed that terrorists and military personnel were killed when insurgents launched a coordinated attack on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State.
The Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, however, did not confirm or debunk reports that the Commander of the 29 Brigade, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, was among those killed in the incident.
Penpushing reports that Onoja in a statement on Thursday explained that the attack occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on April 9, 2026, when insurgents attempted to breach the defensive perimeter of the military installation
Meanwhile, record has it that Nigeria has been fighting a terrorist insurgency for 17 years, since Boko Haram’s 2009 uprising, which has seen the emergence of powerful splinter groups, including Islamic State West Africa Province.
