Tanker explosion claims one life in Abeokuta, vehicles, properties destroyed
A fatal crash involving five vehicles occurred in Ita-Oshin, inbound Olomore axis of Abeokuta North local government area of Ogun State resulting in the death of one person as well as properties destroyed on Saturday evening.
Penpushing reports that the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Corps, Babatunde Akinbiyi who confirmed the incident said vehicles involved include CNG Truck, Nissan Micra, Honda CRV, Nissan Almere and Nissan Almere (Space Wagon).
The agency spokesperson added that the loss of control on part of the truck driver was responsible for the crssh which led to the explosion adding that as at the time of filing this report the presume dead has been taken to Ogun State General Hospital Ijaiye Abeokuta.
Penpushing further reports that Akinbiyi explained that rescue teams comprising Ogun State Traffic Control Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) and both the Ogun State and Federal Fire Fighters were on ground to control the ugly development and equally advised motorists in the affected areas to take alternative routes to their various destinations pending time affected vehicles will be evacuated
The Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) Ogun State Command, in a statement by the Chief Route Commander and Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe confirmed that the motor boy was one person who died from the explosion.
‘The crash occurred at about 1610hrs involving a tanker laden with gas.Number of people involved were 06 and all male adult 02 got injured and unfortunately 01 person died from the fire incident which is the motor boy that was trapped”, Okpe added.
“A total of 05 vehicles were involved. The suspected cause of the crash was mechanical deficiency (brake failure) and the vehicle crash oin the release signed on behalf of the Sector Commander said the Sino Truck with registration number T23771 LA had mechanical deficiency (brake failure) and the driver decided to crash the vehicle on the road barricade”, she added
Penpushing also reports that Okpe explained that the vehicle went up flames, destroying other vehicles around, as well as other properties adding that.vehicles involved in the accident included a Nissan with registration number AAN 544 YC; A Micra marked GDB 841 XR; another Nissan marked LSD 993 CY; and a HONDA CRV with no registration number.
The Command spokesperson addded that the corpse was deposited at the State Hospital morgue in Ijaiye Abeokuta while the injured victims were taken by the families.
Penpushing reports that Governor Dapo Abiodun has expressed great sympathy for the victims of the gas explosion
The Governor in a statement on Saturday night, regretted the loss of life in the inferno and the attendant destruction of properties, however, called for calm, assuring that everything was being done to put the situation under control.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic gas explosion that occurred in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday, which led to the loss of an innocent life and destruction of properties. This is a devastating incident that has brought pain and anguish to many families” Abiodun stated.
“On behalf of the government and people of Ogun State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the lone victim of this tragic incident. My prayers are with them during this difficult time. I also wish to express my sympathy to those who suffered damage to their businesses’,he added
Penpushing further reports that the Governor praised the quick intervention of relevant agencies of government and first responders, which brought the situation under control, noting that relevant authorities have been mandated to ascertain the cause of the explosion and ensure that appropriate measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence.
