Segun Showunmi conferred with Odofin title for impactful leadership in Kessi community of Egbaland

The former Governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ogun State Otunba Segun Showunmi, was on Wednesday conferred with Odofin title, for his major contributions to the growth socio -economic development and impactful leadership in Kessi community of Abeokuta and Ogun State.
Penpushing reports that the colourful traditional ceremony held at the Ogboni House, Keesi, Abeokuta, the state capital attracted traditional chiefs, community leaders, cultural custodians and well-wishers who gathered to witness the historic conferment.
The Egba born Showunmi before being allowed to take his seat inside the sacred Ogboni House, performed age-long rites in accordance with custom, as conducted by the traditional chiefs of the community.
Penpushing further reports that as part of the ritual process, chiefs were required to symbolically place their feet on a designated tree, signifying purification, acceptance and submission to the customs and authority of the Ogboni institution.
The atmosphere was rich with cultural display as traditional drums were used as a form of communication, sending coded messages that signified honour, transition and the conferral of status.

The new traditional title holder speaking with journalists shortly after the ceremony, expressed deep appreciation for the honour bestowed on him, describing the Odofin title as both a privilege and a responsibility.
Penpushing reports that Showunmi explained that Keesi is one of four principal sections, pointing out that it holds significant traditional authority within the Abeokuta structure, stressing that the title is deeply rooted in lineage and heritage.
“Keesi is one of four children. Keesi, the eldest; Kenta; Gbagura; and Oke-Ona. In this section, Keesi holds the highest-ranking authority. It is a traditional title that belongs to the Akinola family, where I come from’, he emphasised
Penpushing further reports that Showunmi revealed that his grandfather was part of the traditional institution, while his father currently holds the position of Balogun, making it mandatory for members of the family to actively participate in preserving their cultural heritage.
“My grandfather was part of it, and my father is the current Balogun. Therefore, it has made it mandatory for us, the children, to partake in the culture,” Showunmi added.
Penpushing also reports that the newly installed Odofin emphasised the importance of sustaining indigenous traditions and ensuring that younger generations understand the value of cultural identity.
The Odofin title is regarded as a highly respected traditional position within the Ogboni structure, often associated with leadership, advisory roles and preservation of customs.
Penpushing reports that observers at the event described the conferment as a reaffirmation of continuity within the traditional hierarchy and a reinforcement of the cultural institutions that remain central to community governance in Abeokuta.
