
Security officials clash with Shiites in Abuja
The Shiite Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and security agents on Friday engaged in a violent clash during the Quds procession by members of the movement around the Banex roundabout in Wuse 2, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Penpushing reports that one of the leaders of the procession Jafaar Gali, explained that the procession started after the Jumat prayers alleging that many of their members have been killed or injured.
The leader stated that the Islamic members were around Zenith Bank at Banex when some soldiers came to stop them, confessing that they(members) also hurled stones at the soldiers.
Penpushing further reports that as at the time of filing this report the claim of Gali that some of their members were killed and injured could not be verify, while it was however, stated that three military vans were seen evacuating some people to an unknown location.
The source simply identified as Muhammad, who is a member of the Shitte in his own account that the bodies of some of their members killed have been taken to Mararaba, Nasarawa State.
Penpushing also reports that Muhammad said the soldiers and the police used excessive force to disperse them adding that some people have been arrested including those not participating in the procession.
The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command Josephine Adeh was yet to make any official statement as at the time of this report, while in same vein spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters Onyenma Nwachukwu was yet to comment on the development
Penpushing reports that as at the time of filing this report it was gathered that police and soldiers have taken over the streets of parts of Abuja, especially the Wuse axis of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
