Douye Diri sworn in as Bayelsa governor

The newly declared  winner and Governor-elect  by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC),  Douye Diri, has  been sworn in as the Governor of Bayelsa State, and formally took over from the immediate past Governor of the State, Seriake Dickson, who completed his two term of eight years rule on Friday.

Penpushing reports that, Diri, who was the Governorship Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), became the Governor, following Supreme court judgement on Thursday which nullified the election victory of  the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), David Lyon, whose Deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo,  presented false information to the electoral commission, for the November 16 Governorship election.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) elected Governor was busy on Thursday undergoing rehearsal for his inauguration scheduled for Friday, when, a five-member panel of the Apex court led by Justice Mary Odili sacked him

Penpushing also reports that the Supreme court in the judgment delivered by Ejembi Eko consequently ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Lyon and his Deputy Degi-Eremienyo.

The judgment equally ordered that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should immediately declare the party with the highest number of lawful votes and geographical spread.

Penpushing also reports that in compliance with the Apex Court directive, the Chairman of the electoral commission Mahmood Yakubu, on Friday, formally declared  Diri winner of the polls, and the commission’s  commissioner for the South-South, May Agbamuche, presented the certificate of return to  Diri and his Deputy.

The new Governor during his swearing in alongside his Deputy, Lawrence Ewhrujakporboth, in his remarks thanked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Supreme Court.

“The court is the last hope for the common man. We pray and hope that God will heal our land, Bayelsa State, and Nigeria.For us, God has taken us through a winding road. And it had taught us lessons of reconciliations and lesson of love”, the Governor said
