Police arrest Portable, to appear in court  on Monday over criminal charges 

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the controversial Hip-hop musician Habeeb Okikiola popularly called Portable over alleged assault and other criminal activities and he is to be arraigned in court on Monday to face criminal charges.

Penpushing reports that  the Command Public Relations Officer Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the arrest on Friday adding that this followed the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum given to him following his failure to honour earlier invitation by the authorities.

The police it is recalled had in a statement on Wednesday said the notorious Nigerian Hip-hop musician risked prosecution over alleged criminal activities which is punishable by the criminal laws of the country

Penpushing further reports that the police emphasized that the action of Portable in a viral video was unruly and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace adding that the known troublesome musician was seen exhibiting irrational behavior and hurling insults at police officers carrying out their legal duty, an action which is criminal and punishable by the criminal laws of Nigeria.

‘The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the actions of one Habeeb Okikiola popularly known by his stage name Portable, in a viral video, where he was seen exhibiting irrational behavior and hurling insults at Police Officers carrying out their legal duty, an action which is criminal and punishable by the criminal laws of Nigeria’, the statement reads.

“The action of the singer in the video was unruly and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and incitement of violence against the officers who were detailed to execute a warrant of arrest on him for series of allegations of criminal acts leveled against Mr Portable’, the statement added

“The NPF will take all necessary steps to investigate his actions and ensure that he is prosecuted for any criminal activity he may have committed depending on the severity of the offense’, the statement emphasised.

‘The Police will not condone any unruly act, assault or attack on its officers who are on lawful duty. We need to respect our law enforcement agents who perpetually take the risk of maintaining law and order and fight crimes and criminality in our society’.

Penpushing also reports that  Police on issuing a 72-hour ultimatum declared that Okikiola, should report himself to the nearest police station or get arrested over alleged assault, adding that the command  moved to arrest Portable after five invites were sent to him and another through his father, which  he turned them all down.

The police explained further that the controversial Hip-hop musician was invited for questioning after a studio owner in a petition claimed that he (Okikiola) accompanied by his boys, beat him to a stupor and locked his studio.

Penpushing reports that the statement said Okikiola had been asked to submit himself to the police or risk being arrested, recalling that his father pleaded on his behalf and promised to bring him to the station.

“On receiving the petition from the police, an invitation letter was sent to him five times, but he refused to appear at the police station. Again, an invitation letter was sent to him through his father; he still did not come to the station’, statement stated.

“The police did not want a breakdown of law and order, so his arrest was to be effected on Tuesday, and now he started with all series of videos, saying all sorts of things. His father has been begging, but we have told him if he refused to turn himself in between now and Friday, he would be arrested”, the statement added

Penpushing further reports that as at the time of filing this report Portable is in custody of the police command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta and on completion of the investigation he would be moved to court to face prosecution
