Peoples Democratic Party replaces Ayu as national chairman
Barely 24-hours after a court sitting in Benue State, Markurdi ordered the embattled Chairman of the crisis ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop parading himself as the National Chairman, the party has appointed the Deputy National Chairman, Umar Damagum (North), as its acting national chairman.
Penpushing reports that the Publicity Secretary of the party Debo Ologunagba, made this known on Tuesday, adding that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party took the decision in line with the court order
“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party at an emergency meeting today, Tuesday, March 28, acknowledged the Order of the Benue State High Court, dated March 27, 2023 with regards to the chairmanship position of our great party.
“After a careful consideration of the Court Order and in line with Section 45 (2) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017), the NWC resolved that the Deputy National Chairman (North) His Excellency, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagun assumes the National Chairmanship of our great Party in acting capacity with effect from today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023. The NWC charges all leaders, critical stakeholders, teeming members and supporters of our great Party to remain calm and united at this critical time”
Penpushing further reports that it is recalled that Justice W.I. Kpochi of the Benue High Court, Makurdi had on Monday ordered Ayu to stop parading himself as the leader of the party following his suspension by his ward, Igyorov Ward, in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.
The judge issued the order following an ex parte application brought by a member of the party in the state, while the ward scribe of the party Vangeryina Dooyum, announced Ayu’s suspension, stressing that he worked against the success of the party in the ward.
Penpushing also reports that Dooyum blamed Ayu for the party’s abysmal outing in the 18 March Governorship and State Assembly election in Benue State, emphasizing that close allies of the embattled national chairman worked against the party thus making the All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure victory in the elections.
