Peoples Democratic Party holds parallel congresses in ogun state to elect officers
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ogun State Chapter on Saturday held parallel congresses to elect new executives for the two factions, a development which further attested to the unresolved crisis within the opposition party in the state.
Penpushing reports that a faction belonging to the 2023 Governorship candidate of the party, Hon. Ladi Adebutu held its congress at the Abeokuta Sports Club, Abeokuta, while the faction led by Deputy Governorship candidate, Hon. Abdulkadir Adekunle Akinlade, former governorship aspirant, Chief Jimi Lawal and the immediate past State Chairman, Hon. (Dr.) Sikirulai Ogundele held its at the NeuGate Exclusive Hall, Agbeloba, Abeokuta, the state capital.
The Adebutu faction produced Abayomi Tella as State Chairman, and in similar vein, the faction led by Akinlade in conjunction with Chief Jimi Lawal elected the immediate past chairman of the party, Hon Sikirulai Ogundele as the Chairman
Penpushing further reports that in similar development Adebutu’s group produced Sunday Solarin as the secretary, while the Lawal-led group elected Alhaji Salisu Abdulwaheed Oloruntola as the secretary of the faction.
The congress committee of the party headed Alhaji Kabiru Baffa Jauro conducted the congress that produced Tella as the chairman and in same vein, congress committee led by Alhaji Kola Akinyemi conducted the congress that produced Sikiru Ogundele as chairman.
Penpushing also reports both parallel congresses monitored by the police and other relevant agencies produced a journalist, Austin Oniyokor as Publicity Secretary of the Lawal group, while an architect, Adebayo Kayode emerged the spokesperson of the Adebutu’s group.
The same development was extended to other 36 state executive positions that make up the elected state executive officers, while record has it that the new twist comes on the heels of the dispute that ravaged the ward and local government congresses held on the August,31, 2024 and September 14, 2024 in the build up to the state congress.
Penpushing reports that it is recalled that crisis which led to the parallel congress had been linked to alleged refusal to use of the registers authenticated by the national leadership of the party for the ward congress which is in favour of the Lawal-led group.
The group of Adebutu group was, however, alleged to have refused to submit its registers to the national leadership of the party for authentication ahead of the congresses, while it was learnt that the authenticated registers consist names of the delegates to the ward congress.
Penpushing further reports that this, however, indicated those to vote and be voted for at the elective congress in line with Section 8 (10) of the constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) (as amended in 2017
Meanwhile, the issue has turned out a subject of litigation before the Federal High Court in Abeokuta which has adjourned the matter till 15th October, 2024, for the hearing of the preliminary objection and originating summon
