Palliative beneficiaries die at church organized event
A palliative distribution organized by the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama District of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday resulted in a stampede leaving several people dead and dozens injured.
Penpushing reports that during the distribution there was orderliness when thousands of residents including children and women from nearby settlements such as Mpape and Gishiri Village scrambled to receive relief items, leading to the deadly crush.
The National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Mike Umoh, confirmed the incident, stating that as at the time of filing this report details of causalities are still sketchy
Penpushing further reports that Public Relations Officer of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Josephine Adeh, was quoted saying that 10 people were confirmed dead and eight others were injured, adding that four of the injured victims had been treated and discharged, while the remaining four received medical care.
“This tragic event, which happened at about 6:30 am, led to a stampede that claimed the lives of ten (10) individuals, including four (4) children, and left eight (8) others with varying degrees of injuries. Four (4) of the injured have been treated and discharged, while the remaining victims are receiving medical care,” the police stated on X.
Penpushing also reports that the statement added that every charitable activity that would lead to a large gathering of people must be reported to the police authorities before they proceed.
‘To prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future, the Command hereby directs that all organisations, religious bodies, groups, or individuals planning any public event, charitable activity, or large gathering in the FCT must notify the Police Command in advance, Adeh said.
Penpushing reports that in similar development many people were killed on Saturday during a stampede in Okija, a community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, having been there to take part in the sharing of bags of rice donated by a renowned entrepreneur, Ernest Obiejesi, popularly known as Obijackson.
Meanwhile it is also recalled that similar sad incident occurred in Ibada, Oyo State Capital, where thirty-people mostly children died at children’s funfair organized by a Non-Government Organisation(NGO) in collaboration with a privately own radio station
