Organ Trafficking: Nigerian Senator Ike Ekweremadu, wife jailed in London
The Nigerian Senator and former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has been sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison by the United Kingdom court having been found guilty of organ harvest crime.
Penpushing reports that Ekeremadu was sentenced on Friday alongside his wife, Beatrice, who also bagged four years and six months, while a Medical practitioner who allegedly colluded with them, Dr Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The couple it is recalled allegedly procured a 21-year-old Nigerian and flew him to London with the intention to harvest his kidney for their sick daughter, while the judge, Justice Johnson in pronouncing the sentence described the Nigerian politician as the driving force of the crime
Penpushing further reports at a televised sentence hearing, the judge said he took into consideration a 51-page document pleading for leniency for Ekweremadu and highlighting how he is a person of upstanding character.
Meanwhile, the former Nigeria’s President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in a letter to the United Kingdom authorities and Nigerian parliament among others, it is recalled, had earlier pleaded for leniency for the couple.
