
Delta state sustains investment in sports development clinches fifth consecutive victory at National Sports Festival
The Delta state participants at the just concluded National Sports Festival (NSF), held in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital have emerged champions of the two weeks tournaments for the fifth consecutive time.
Penpushing reports that Chairman of the Main Organising Committee of the championship tagged, ‘Gateway Games 2024’, Bukola Olopade officially announced victory of the Delta State athletes on Thursday at the closing ceremony held at Moshood Abiola Sports Area in Abeokuta
The final medal tally as at the closing ceremony has yet to be released due to the pending conclusion of the Table Tennis event, but Delta State had already secured a commanding lead, making its overall victory indisputable.
Penpushing further reports that record has it that Delta State has consistently dominate lead in the tournaments while the latest victory reflects years of sustained investment in sports development, athlete training, and youth empowerment programs.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee’s Women Commission presented special recognition trophies to Anambra and Kogi states, along with a team of Invited Junior Athletes, for their efforts in promoting equal participation of women within their contingents.
Penpushing also reports that as the championship ended in Abeokuta, attention is now turns to Enugu State, which has been named the next host of the National Sports Festival, often referred to as Nigeria’s “mini-Olympics,”
The tournaments brings together athletes from across the country to compete in various sporting disciplines, and beyond the competition, this year’s festival also highlighted progress in gender inclusion in Nigerian sports.
Penpushing reports that have expressed optimism that Enugu state will continue and expand upon the gender inclusion initiatives introduced this year, with the initiative widely applauded as a step toward bridging the gender gap in sports representation.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Festival (NSF)not only showcases athletic talent but also fosters unity, diversity, and national pride, and in rounding off the competition the Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun was joined by dignitaries to celebrate his 65th birthday which coincide with the closing ceremony
