Only one woman in race for governorship seat in edo state
The Governorship candidate of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Patience Ofure-Key is the only female flagbearer to contest the Saturday Governorship election in Edo State out of the seventeen candidates for the seat
Penpushing reports that Ofure-Key is said to be defying the odds to put up a good fight, but the situation further stresses the low representation of women in the Nigerian political atmosphere, however, there are six other women who will be on the ballot as Deputy Governorship candidates at the poll.
The only female candidate holds a dual Nigerian and United States citizen, has a varied career in health, business, and philanthropy, held several leadership positions, including as Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Chamber of Commerce in the United States of America (USA).
Penpushing further reports that the 50-year-old Ofure-Key, however, presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) only her Senior Secondary School Certificate obtained from the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), cleared 17 candidates but recently Candidate of Action Alliance (AA) Iseghohi Tom recently pulled out, this leaves 16 others to slug it out in the race to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Penpushing also reports that of the 17 cleared candidates, all eyes are on three major contenders- Asuerinme Ighodalo of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumide Akpata of Labour Party(LP).
The Candidate of Labour Party (LP) out of the three leading contenders, only has a female Deputy, 42-year-old, Oluyinka Alufohai on the ballot alongside Akpata, as his Deputy reflecting support for gender balance.
Penpushing reports that the female Deputies include Obazee Ramatu (Action Democratic Party), Ovarenua Paul (All People’s Party), Omorogbe Kingsley (Boot Party), Alufohai Oluyinka (Labour Party), and Isopkan Ihueghian (New Nigeria People’s Party) as well as Idubor Joyce (Zenith Labour Party).
