Nigeria defeat Cameroon, qualify for cup of nations quarter-final

The Nigeria Soccer squad, Super Eagles on Saturday defeated the Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions with 2-0 in the round of 16 clash at the on-going African Cup of Nations (AFCON) at Cote d’Ivoire, Abidjan, on the coast of western Africa.

Penpushing reports that with the victory Super Eagles will now encounter Angola on Friday, February, 2, 2024 at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in the first quarter-final of the championship.

The Super Eagles Coach Jose Peseiro reinstated Alex Iwobi, Zaidu Sanusi, and Lookman with continuation of the 3-4-3 formation, which made the team better from the start and laid siege to the Cameroon defence as well as effectively kept the Lions at arms.

Penpushing further reports that Semi Ajayi’s goal in the 9th minute was disallowed due to a marginal offside, but the Super Eagles dominated the pace, ensuring goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali had no saves to make.

The dynamic performance of Victor Osimhen  paid off as he pressured Oumar Gonzalez in the 36th minute, leading to a pass to Ademola Lookman for Nigeria’s first goal, while Fabrice Ondoa tried his best to keep out Lookman’s effort but it squirmed under Andre Onana’s replacement.

Penpushing also reports that the second half followed the same script with Nwabali on holiday despite Cameroon having more ball possession, while the Chippa United goalkeeper was injured in the 80th minute and was replaced by Francis Uzoho, and Coach Rigobert Song sent on Vincent Aboubakar but he came on too late to make any difference.

The Super Eagles player Lookman confirmed Nigeria’s passage in the 90th minute after a good combination play with Calvin Bassey down the left flank, while the Cameroonians had 57 per cent ball possession, but they failed to register any shots on target.
