Ogun state speaker elemide saves impeached speaker from suspension over alleged violation of assembly regulations

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Oludaisi Elemide saved the impeached speaker Rt Kunle Oluomo from a move by the assembly to suspend him from the chambers for fourteen days.

Penpushing reports that at the plenary on Tuesday a member representing Abeokuta North State Constituency, Hon. (Dr) Babatunde Tella led other five members in a motion suspending the former Speaker.

The new Speaker ruling on the motion after it was debated by all the other co- sponsors, pleaded with his colleague-lawmakers to consider the state and the efforts of the Dapo Abiodun led administration in conjuction with the legislature in turning around the State for better.

Penpushing further reports that Elemide noted that such efforts could only yield the desired results for the advancement of the state, when there is peace and tranquility in all spheres of governance, hence the need to suspend action on the matter.

The Speaker, who explained that although, Oluomo had violated the regulations of the House but the present leadership would be magnanimous in always upholding the sanity of the institution being the symbol of democracy.

Penpushing also reports that earlier, Tella who is Deputy Chief Whip had opened the debate on the motion, stating that, the assembly noted with serious concern and dismay the unwholesome attitude of Oluomo, putting the image of this House in bad light and disrepute.

‘This Honourable House note with serious concern and dismay the unwholesome attitude of Rt. Hon Olakunle Oluomo, which is detrimental to the physical, mental and moral well-being of this Honourable House and how this attitude is putting the image of this House in bad light and disrepute’, Tella stated.

‘Further note is the fact that by taking this House to the court of law, he had shown a clear manifestation of an unfriendly disposition and disregard to the laws and statutes guiding the operations of this House’, he said.

‘Also of note is the Legislative Powers and Priviledges act of 2018 section 21 on Pre action notice which states “A person who has cause of action against a legislative House shall give a three months written notice to the Office of the Clerk of the Legislative House disclosing the cause of action and relief sought”, Tella added.

‘However, consequent upon the fact that Rt Hon Olakunle Oluomo has refused to follow due process before taking this House to the court of Law, he has contravened the laws guiding the operations of this House and deemed guilty as he cannot claim ignorance being a former Speaker of the same House”.

‘Consequently, having being deemed guilty of the above as there is no record of three months’ notice being sent to the Office of the Clerk, an action that contravened the Legislative Powers and Priviledges Act 2018’, he noted.

‘I therefore in consonance with ORDER X RULE 71 (4) move that Rt Hon Olakunle Oluomo be suspended from the activity of this Honorable House for 14 legislative days’, Tella emphasized in the motion for suspension.

Penpushing reports that other lawmakers who spoke in support of the motion including the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, Adegoke Adeyanju, Oluseun Adesanya and Waliu Owode explained that the former Speaker’s activities were in violation of the rules and regulations of the House.
