
Ogun state representative, Taiwo Ogunbanwo dethrones Nigeria’s number one shooter at national sports festival
The Ogun State representative in the shooting event at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF) Taiwo Ogunbanwo has dethroned Nigeria’s number one shooter Okposo Esugo, representing Delta State at the tournament to secure gold medal for the host state.
Penpushing reports that at the finals of the shooting held in the theater hall of June 12, Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogunbanwo defeated seven other shooters to claim gold in men’s 10metre air rifle.
The champion of the tournament fired 24 shots in 12 rounds with 225.4 point while the Edo State representative, Esugo who came second recorded 223.5 and Samuel Okanlawon of Borno state polled 204.0 point to win the bronze medal.
Penpushing further reports that the feat recorded by Ogunbanwo on Thursday night has equally improved Ogun State performance on the medal table, while his team mate Oluremi Emmanuel claimed silver medals in team’s 10m air rifle for Ogun state team.
The gold medalists speaking with journalists after the victory attributed his success to the adequate preparation and effective working tools provided by the Ogun state government to prepare for the festival.
Penpushing also reports that Ogunbanwo who was carried shoulder high by his fans and spectators after the victorious outing added that the N2.5million promised by Governor Dapo Abiodun motivated him and lifted his spirit.
Meanwhile, it is recalled that Okposo Esugo of Delta state has been dominating the gold medal in 10m air rifle for the past 15years a feat which earned him Nigeria number one shooter, but was displaced by Ogunbanwo.
