Ogun state pensioners accuse labour congress of non challance to their plight
The Nigerian Union of Pensioners(NUP),Ogun State Chapter has indicted the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) of neglecting the senior citizens, when the congress is most needed to help address their welfare with the State Government.
Penpushing reports that, the Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners(NUP),Dr Bola Lawal made the allegation against the leadership of the workers, while featuring on a monitore programme, ;Oju Abe”on Splash F,M radio station in Abeokuta.
The scribe who sounded bitter emphasised that, the State Chapter of the labour congress had been unfair to the union, as the umbrella body, lamenting that, it is regrettable that, the congress had abandoned the pensioners to their fates.
‘Nigeria Labour Congress is the umbrella body of all workers union, and Nigeria Union of Pensioners is also under the labour congress, but it is regrettable that, the labour congress had not been favourable to us, and not doing well for us’, Lawal declared.
Penpushing further reports that, he recalled in 2011 when there was review of workers salary, he approached the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) for consideration of the pensioners, as beneficiaries of the upward review of their pension
‘I remember in 2011, when there was move to increase minimum wage to N18,000, when we still have some of our members still collecting N1,000. I was annoyed and had to approach the press to condemn NLC, that it was high time to accommodate NUP’
‘But they knew we cannot go on strike, all what we can do is to protest, and government on its own part, did not pity us. We have seen a governor in the state, asking if pensioners are still alive, are all of them not dead’
Penpushing also reports that, Lawal who was sounding tough during the interview pointed out that despite the fact that the Nigeria Labour Congress( NLC) deductions from the monthly peanuts pension into the labour’s account, the development had not been palatable for the pensioners
‘They don’t bother about us,they know, the only thing we can do is to make noise. We are not considered for pension review as done for NLC. Nigerian government does not honour pensioners as done in developed countries. We are only relevant to them during election, when they needed our votes’,Lawal stated
