Ogun state court sentence man to death by hanging for armed robbery

An armed robber, Nurudeen Monsuru, has been sentenced to death by hanging on the order of an Abeokuta High Court, sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital

Penpushing reports that, during the trial, prosecution counsel, Funmilayo Akinola had informed the court that, the convict committed the offence at Kere village along Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway on March 15, 2016 at about 9pm.

The convict pleaded not guilty, while the prosecutor said he conspired and robbed one Fatima Adedeji and other business women of their money and phones explaining that  the complainants which include , Fatima and others, all of them traders had boarded a bus coming from Obada Idiemi market and on getting to Kere village their bus developed mechanical fault.

Penpushing also reports that the court was told that, while the driver was trying to rectify the fault, the convict and one other suspect came with a bajaj motorcycle and robbed the victims armed with  a locally made gun.

“The traders, who were stranded, went to Awowo palace to report the incident to the Kabiyesi and they also passed the night at the palace. The convict was arrested, through the help of the complainant, describing the looks of the convict, saying that the convict motorcycle was tagged with a logo “No Time” and also he was wearing a earring and had a mark at the back of ear,” she told the court

Penpushing reports that, the prosecutor stated  that the information given by the complainant made it possible for the monarch and vigilante officers in producing the convict, and subsequent arraignment.

The prosecutor said after the arrest, the complainant was invited and was able to identify the armed robber, who could not deny the allegation and subsequently handed over to the police for prosecution on two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and armed robbery.

Penpushing further reports that, the prosecution counsel said that the offence committed contravened Section 6(b) and 1(2)( a) of the Robbery and Firearms (special provisions) Act, Cap Rll Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Meanwhile, the trial judge, Justice Ayokunle Rotimi-Balogun,in his judgement  noted that all the evidence tendered had convinced the court beyond reasonable doubt that the convict was guilty and also committed the offences, and thereafter sentenced Monsuru to death by hanging.
