Nigeria Union of Journalists Consolidated Chapel marks World Television Day

The Consolidated Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council on Friday joined the world to mark the 2025 World Television Day with a strong call for ethical responsibility in the use of emerging technologies in the media.

Penpushing reports that the Chairperson of the chapel, Bose Akintunde in her welcome speech at the event held at the Iwe-Iroyin Press Centre, Abeokuta said television remains a unifying platform for information despite the rise of digital content, adding that frontier technologies must be deployed with integrity, transparency, and fairness.

The chairperson emphasized that artificial intelligence, immersive broadcasting, data analytics, and next-generation networks offer transformative possibilities, but insisted that their application must protect human dignity, accuracy, and accountability.

Penpushing further reports that Akintunde pointed out that ethics in action ensures that technology strengthens human values rather than diminishes them, warning that misuse of artificial intelligence and digital tools could threaten journalism, democracy, and public trust.

The Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council Wale Olanrewaju in his remarks commended the Consolidated Chapel for its consistency and professionalism.

Penpushing also reports that he described the celebration as a capacity-building platform at a time when journalism is being reshaped by rapid technological evolution, noting that 44 media organisations in the state are increasingly exposed to tools such as automated newsrooms and real-time connectivity,

The chairman added that journalists must embrace innovation without compromising accuracy, fairness, and public interest, recalling that the chapel had once come under pressure to be dissolved.

Penpushing reports that he praised its leadership for upholding standards and appreciating the state council’s efforts and urged practitioners to avoid content manipulation, uphold truth, and maintain trust in an era of rising misinformation.

The Chief Executive Officer of Pelican Valley Nigeria Limited, Dr. Babatunde Adeyemo, in his goodwill message urged young journalists and mass communication students to take advantage of globalization.

Penpushing further reports that the journalist turned realtor stated that social media has become a central platform for content creation and revenue generation and encouraged media students to acquire digital skills, stressing that university curricula must adapt to new realities.

The founder of Penpushing Media, Prince Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji in his goodwill message expressed delight that the chapel which he contributed to its emergence has continued to do well

‘Let me say this publicly I am happy on the progress of the consolidated chapel because I played major role in its emergence. I recalled the journey few years ago, and here we are today. I must commend the leadership of the chapel, I am proud of the chapel, and I pray you will continue to forge ahead positively’, Kayode-Adedeji stated.

The Special Assistant to Ogun State Governor on Communication, Otunba Dare Odufowokan in his own goodwill message tasked journalists to come to reality of new media, adding that the era of writing news on papers for later publication is gone, stressing that the advent of technology needs to be adopted.

The General Manager Federal Radio Corporation (FRCN), Paramount F,M, Oluremi Olugbenro in her goodwill message pointed out that the topic of the event was timely and relevant, and commended the chapel for the choice of veteran journalist, Eddy Aina as the lecturer.

Penpushing further reports that Olugbenro emphasized that it was a privileged for all participants to learn from journalism experience of the renowned media practitioner, stressing that on her own part, she purposely came to draw from professionalism knowledge of the keynote speaker

The keynote speaker who is a veteran journalist Sir Eddy Aina, in his paper themed, “Ethics in Action: Harnessing Frontier Technologies for the Benefit of All’, traced the evolution of television technology from analog equipment to satellite broadcasting and current digital innovations.

Penpushing also reports that the former Director National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) warned that despite technological advancement, Nigeria’s rural population remains underserved due to reliance on subscription-based viewing platforms, which he described as widening the information gap.

The guest lecturer, who is a member of Editorial Board of Penpushing Media raised concerns about the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence AI-generated content, deepfakes, and algorithmic bias, citing global examples including the 2021 Donald Trump speech controversy at British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the use of Artificial Intelligence AI-driven misinformation during elections in the United States of America (USA), Sudan, Ethiopia, and Nigeria.

Penpushing further reports that Aina stressed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools lack human judgment and, if unregulated, could undermine democracy and distort public perception.

The renowned journalist called for urgent training of Nigerian journalists on Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage, stricter ethical guidelines, public education, and stronger collaboration between media organisations, policymakers, and researchers to address the challenges of AI-driven misinformation.

Penpushing reports that Aina pointed out that ethics in action is the clarion call for media practitioners globally, adding that failure to uphold media ethics could plunge society into confusion.

Meanwhile, the event featured robust conversations on professionalism, responsibility, and the future of broadcasting, reinforcing global calls for ethical standards as frontier technologies reshape the media landscape.
