Night Horror: 15 killed, burnt beyond recognition in Enugu highway crash

Fifteen occupants of a Toyota bus were killed and burnt beyond recognition on Saturday on the Port Harcourt-Enugu Highway, when the bus had a head-on collision with a Mercedes truck, and have equally been given mass burial as at the time of filing this report.

Penpushing reports that spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bisi Kazeem, made this known in a statement while confirming the sad incident, stating that the accident occurred at the Enugu end of the highway at about 8.20 p.m.

The Assistant Corps Marshal, in the statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said as the time of this report all obstructions have been cleared, adding that Enugu State Fire Service already extinguished the fire on the bus.

“The victims have been given mass burial. All obstructions have been cleared. Enugu State Fire Service already extinguished the fire on the bus. The fatal crash is blameable on several factors including fatigue, which must have made one of the drivers sleep on the wheels,’’ he stated.

Penpushing further reports that Kazeem  in the statement explained that the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, has  advised motorists to desist from night journeys to reduce fatalities from road crashes.

The statement added that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) boss noted that most fleet operators and other vehicle owners, including private vehicle owners addicted to night journeys, did so for selfish economic gains and observed that most night travellers indulge in the overloading of vehicles with passengers and goods.

Penpushing also reports that Biu said travellers should plan their journeys for the daytime pointing out that when crashes occur away from Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) rescue points, it is difficult to access help from other motorists at night.
