NIGERIANS PROTEST XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS
The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Sina Olukolu, said Nigerians were expressing their displeasure against South African businesses as part of the recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other foreigners in South Africa.
Penpushing further reports that, Olukolu said he had dispatched teams from several police units to the location to forestall the outbreak of violence, adding “Our men are on the ground to protect the area and ensure that no serious damage is done to the building,”.
The protest equally took place in Akwa Ibom at an MTN outlet a South African telecoms company, which is the largest mobile phone operator in Nigeria, and in same vein, occurred at the Shoprite outlet by Jakande Bus-Stop in Lejji
Penpushing also reports that, the police and other security personnel foiled an attempt by irate protesters to burn a Shoprite location in Lekki, Lagos, while a resident of a nearby Estate, Gboyega Bashorun, said he was returning home from work when he noticed a raging inferno.
“I was coming back from work around 3:30 when I suddenly noticed a burning fire at the Shoprite by Jakande Bus-Stop. I saw a raging fire and saw several police vans and other security people at the entrance. The Mobil and SPG gas stations nearby also closed their gates. I later gathered that it was retaliation for what happened in South Africa,” he added.
The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, could not be reach as at the time of filing this report, while Nigerians on social media have called for a boycott of South African businesses across the country.
