Nigerian lawmakers move to split Oyo State into two
The House of Representatives has passed, for second reading, a bill seeking to split Oyo State into two distinct states, proposing the creation of new Oyo State with Oyo town as its capital, and renaming of the remaining part of state as Ibadan state.
Penpushing reports that Hon Akeem Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Oyo and six others sponsored the constitutional amendment aims to create the new state, and in addition the bill proposes Ibadan city as the capital of proposed Ibadan state.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon Abbas Tajudeen announced that the bill was straightforward legislation that did not require debate, hence, it was debated by his colleagues, while the speaker subsequently referred the bill to the Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative action.
Penpushing reports that Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, by the administration of late military ruler General Murtala Mohammed following the division of the former Western State, and there have been several attempts to create different states out of the present Oyo State.
The attempt was in the past, such bills to create Oke-Ogun and Ibadan states had failed to scale through, and in the ongoing constitution review, there is a bill to create Oke-Ogun State, sponsored by Hon Oluwole Oke of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Osun state.
