Nigerian journalist found dead in soakaway three days after declared missing

A veteran journalist and former staff of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Hamisu Danjibga, known to have reported extensively on the widespread insecurity has been found dead in a soakaway pit in his house three days after he was declared missing in Zamfara State.

Penpushing reports that a family member who does not want his name in print confirmed the shocking discovery, recalling that the veteran broadcast journalist had earlier being declared missing on Sunday, while his telephone line was said not to be available in a bid to located his whereabout

The member of the family, added that he was informed by the family that Danjigba   had not been seen since Sunday morning, and thereafter started calling his line but it was unreachable, and couldn’t get him throughout that day.

Penpushing further reports that the family source said the deceased family later informed the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and later the police authorities in the state.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zamfara State Council in s statement issued by the Secretary, Ibrahim Ahmad, later confirmed the death of their colleague, as well as discovery of the corpse in a sock away behind his house three days after missing.

‘Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists regret to announce the death of Hamisu Danjibga a reporter with Voice of Nigeria (VON) whose body was found in a sock away behind his house three days after missing’, the statement said.

‘The discovery of his corpse was a result of an unpleasant odour observed by Islamiya Children in the evening of Wednesday 20th September 2023 who drew the attention of their teachers’, the union added.

‘After breaking the soak away the body was confirmed to be that of Danjibga by his family and some neighbours. His funeral rites have since been observed according to Islamic injunctions’, Ahmad added.

Penpushing also reports that the union in the statement made available to journalists called on security agents to thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators of the act to justice.

The deceased in his lifetime as a journalist, was praised for his style of reporting, while several of his colleagues admitted that his broadcast voice gave him an edge over others in the industry as he spent over three decades as a reporter.

Penpushing reports that the immediate former Director General of New Media at the Zamfara Government House Ibrahim Zauma pointed out that Danjibga main concern was the security situation, lamenting that unknown to him that it would be the reason for his death

The Zamfara State Police Command Public Relations Officer Yazeed Abubakar as at the time of filing this report was yet to make any official statement over the ugly development, but promised to get back to journalists on the incident.
