Diesel truck supplying fuel to sports festival venue catches fire, no life lost

A diesel truck supplying fuel to the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, one of the major venues of the ongoing National Sports Festival, on Tuesday caught fire and erupted in flames.

Penpushing reports that the fire outbreak sent athletes and spectators scrambling for safety, but no life was lost in the incident as fire fighters arrived the venue earlier enough to control the fire, as activities resumed thereafter

The official of the National Sports Festival, who preferred anonymity when contacted confirmed the incident, explaining the incident occurred when the truck came to supply diesel to the generating set at the complex

“Fire outbreak at the Alake Sports Complex, venue of the indoor games of the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta. No casualties as the driver was able to drive the truck far from the venue’, the official added

“The truck came to supply diesel to the generating set that powers the Complex. State Fire Service men were able to put out the fire though it took about 45mins before they arrived’, he explained

Penpushing further reports that the Ogun State government, in swift response to the incident assured athletes participating in the ongoing National Sports Festival being held in Abeokuta and other parts of the state, as well as the residents of their safety.

The Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, in a statement, said that while there was an incident involving a diesel tanker that resulted in a fire outbreak, the fire was immediately put out to prevent any damage.

Penpushing also reports that Akinmade commended the promptness and proactiveness of the fire service in the state and the vigilance of officials at the complex, assuring participants at the sports festival of total safety.

“The incident this afternoon involving a diesel tanker close to one of our facilities for the National Sports Festival was very unfortunate. We thank God that the fire was immediately put out to avert any casualties’, he added.

“To this end, we want to assure all our athletes and the people of the state of safety and that there is no cause for alarm as the situation is under absolute control,” the statement read.
