Nigerian Communications Commission emerges winner at digital awareness programme awards
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has emerged winner of the 2025 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prize for its Digital Awareness Programme (DAP) under Category C3: Access to Information and Knowledge.
Penpushing reports that the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the commission Dr Aminu Maida, received the award at the WSIS Prizes Winners 2025 ceremony held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Chief Executive Officer speaking at the ceremony, expressed appreciation to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the WSIS organisers for recognising Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive digital development, pointing out that the honour would further inspire the Commission’s efforts.
“This recognition goes beyond celebrating past achievements. It is a strong encouragement to do more. Investing in digital inclusion is investing in national development, and this award shows that Nigeria’s efforts are visible and valued globally,” he said.
Penpushing further reports that in addition to the Digital Awareness Programme (DAP) victory, four other Nigerian initiatives were recognised at the ceremony after being nominated for the Champions Category.
The victory includes Women Techsters and the Advanced Digital Empowerment Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADEPTI) under Capacity Building, the Telecom-Based Research Grant Initiative under Enabling Environment, and the Digital Learning Initiative under e-Learning.
Penpushing also reports that the Digital Awareness Programme (DAP) outperformed hundreds of competing projects submitted for the 2025 WSIS Prizes, securing the highest number of votes in its category to claim the top honour.
The programme designed to strengthen digital learning, provides secondary schools across Nigeria with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities and internet connectivity, enhancing teaching, learning and research activities.
Penpushing reports that since its launch in 2006, more than 300 schools across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones have benefitted from the initiative.
