Nigeria Railway Corporation accuses local government chairman of vandalism
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has alleged the chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government of Oyo state, Kehinde Amanda on the destruction and removal of railway fixed assets along its right-of-way in the council area.
Penpushing reports that Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa in a statement said the destroyed assets were valued at several million naira, recalling that the incident occurred on Monday, February, 2, 2026.
The Managing Director alleged that the chairman led thugs, individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and Amotekun operatives to vandalise the commission property at the Mile One-Ten axis.
Penpushing further reports that Opeifa stated that the council chairman claimed to be acting on the instructions of Governor Seyi Makinde, adding that the rails, sleepers, signal poles, billboards and fences belonging to the commission tenants along the corridor were destroyed and carted away.
The commission boss stated that the affected area is a clearly defined and statutorily protected railway right-of-way, adding that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Police Command officers were resisted while attempting to repel the action, forcing their withdrawal from the scene.
Penpushing also reports that Opeifa described the incident as a grave violation, stating that the corporation was documenting the matter comprehensively for further action, emphasizing that the commission will pursue appropriate security, administrative and legal measures to safeguard its assets and prevent future encroachments nationwide.
The Managing Director appealed to the Oyo State Governor to call the council chairman to order to avert a breakdown of law and order, and equally pledged the corporation’s continued commitment to maintaining law and order in spite of the provocation.
