Multi-stakeholders dialogue on rebuilding trust in the electoral process, elections to hold in Lagos
The International Press Centre (IPC) in collaboration with the lead implementing partner of component4 (Support to media) of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase 2 (EUSDGN II) project, are organizing multi-stakeholders’ dialogue on rebuilding trust in the electoral process and elections.
Penpushing reports that the Executive Director, International Press Centre (IPC), Lanre Arogundade explained that the one-day dialogue is scheduled to hold Monday, March 25, 2024 in Lagos
The Director added that said all stakeholders and participants have been contacted, explaining that the media and civil society driven dialogue/forum aims to promote insightful discourse among critical election and democratic governance stakeholders towards deepening commitments for multi-sectoral collaborative frameworks in rebuilding trust in the electoral process and institutions with off-cycle elections, other electoral activities and the 2027 elections in view.
Penpushing further reports that he said the forum shall seek to harness observations and recommendations on how Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Media, Civil Societies Organisations (CSOs), Law Enforcement Agencies, Political Party Leaders, Youths, Women and the citizens, in general, can effectively play the roles expected of them and collaborate in deepening the process for credible elections in Nigeria.
The International Press Centre (IPC) boss stated that the lead paper, ‘The Role of Critical Stakeholders in Rebuilding Trust in Electoral Institutions, the Electoral Processes and Elections in Nigeria’ shall be delivered by Prof. Isaac Albert, Professor of African History, Peace and Conflict Studies at the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan.
Penpushing also reports that Arogundade disclosed that the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu shall be represented by Prof. Ayobami Salami, who is the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos State, while, Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu, Election Administration Expert, Development Alternatives Incorporated (DAI) shall chair the event.
‘There shall also be special sessions and input from key multi-stakeholders’ representatives including the Chairman of IPAC and representatives of key institutions like the National Orientation Agency, the security agencies, traditional and religious groups, CSOs, the representative of the EU delegation, EUSDGN partners, the media, women, youths, students and community leaders, etc.’, he added
