MILITARY TAKES OVER POWER IN GABON,PRESIDENCY SAYS ITS A FAILED COUP
The ailing President, Ali Bongo, who has been outside the country for two months was reported to have suffered stroke in October last year and also received treatment in Morrocco. Bongo succeeded his father, Omar Bongo as President in 2009, and won re-election in 2016 in a poll marred by violence and accusations of fraud.
Penpushing can also authoritatively reports that Bongo has sought to put an end to the rumours about his health, during a New Year message, in which he said he was fine, which the soldiers seen as a relentless attempt to cling onto power.
“It reinforced doubts about his ability to assume the responsibilities of his role as President of the Republic”, said Lt Kelly Ondo Obiang, the leader of the so-called Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon. He specifically appealed to young people to “take charge of their destiny”.
Penpushing further reports that, the Presidency in Gabon has announced that an attempt to topple the administration had failed and four of the plotters have been arrested and are in custody, adding further the government was in charge and everything is under control.
Penpushing reports that, a government spokesman, Guy-Bertrand Mapangou , was quoted saying, “the government is in place. The institutions are in place.”
It is recalled that, elections in the country have been discredited by reports of irregularities and fraud, while the country also has a reputation for widespread corruption.
