Lagos state electoral commission announces date for 2025 local government election
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has scheduled July 12, 2025 for the local government election, which will also include 37 local council development authorities and 376 wards
Penpushing reports that the Head of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Tope Ojo, made this known in an announcement explaining that the election for 57 council chairmanship positions and 376 councillor seats will take place on 12 July 12, and If necessary, a re-run will occur on July 19,2025.
The notice said election date was chosen to avoid a leadership vacuum in the state’s councils, and with the current local government administration nearing its end, the electoral body has ramped up efforts for a smooth election process.
Penpushing further reports that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), has officially launched the electoral process with the release of the notice of election, while political parties must visit the commission headquarters to obtain nomination forms for their candidates.
The Head of Public Affairs of the commission confirmed that a meeting with all registered political parties is set for Tuesday., stressing that the election guidelines will be published on April 17, 2025
Penpushing also reports that Ojo stated that the campaigns and rallies will start on April 18 and end on July 9, adding that nomination forms for substituted and only candidate submissions must be submitted between June 18 and June 25, 2025.
The Chairman of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), assured a fair and level playing field for all political parties, and equally reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to holding a free, fair, inclusive, and credible election.
Penpushing reports that Okikiolu-Ighile encouraged political parties and aspirants to strictly follow the electoral timetable, while it is recalled that the last local government election in the state was held on July 24, 2021.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the chairmanship seats in all the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas in that contest in the state and also won 375 of the 377 councilorship seats spread across the twenty local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Penpushing further reports that the ruling party lost only two councillorship seats — one each to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP), a result which showed Adeshola Thomas of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winning in Ward G, Yaba Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), while Omotunde Abdul-Kareem of Young Progressives Party (YPP), won in Ward D of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs)
