Jailed former South Africa President, Jacob Zuma hospitalized

The jailed former President of South Africa  Jacob Zuma has been admitted in an hospital outside the Correctional Service Department  for medical observation, as the authorities said the healthcare of Zuma require the involvement of the South African Military Health Services

Penpushing reports that, the Correctional Services Department made this known, in a statement adding that a routine observation prompted that the former President, who is serving a 15-month jail sentence be taken for hospitalization

The Jacob Zuma Foundation also confirmed the development, adding that as at the time of filing this report, the 79 year old former President of South Africa is in the hospital outside the prison, while it is recalled that he was admitted to the correctional facility in Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal province almost a month ago to start serving a 15-month jail sentence handed to him by the Constitutional Court for contempt of court.

“The Foundation confirms the statement by Correctional Services that indeed H.E President Zuma is in Hospital outside the prison. The 79 year old, 1st prisoner of the ConCourt, jailed without trial is attending to his annual medical routine check up. No need to be alarmed,…yet’’, the foundation stated.

Penpushing further reports that, Zuma’s hospitalisation comes days after the Pietermaritzburg High Court issued a directive that an in-person hearing involving him would be heard in open court rather than virtually.

The Zuma’s lawyers has, however argued  that the court’s proposal for a virtual hearing of Zuma’s special plea application in his arms deal corruption is a violation of the former president’s right to a fair trial. The hearing is set for August 10, 2021.
