Iyalode Lawson wants parents of yahoo yahoo boys arrested
The Iyalode of Yorubaland, Iyalode Alaba Lawson has canvassed for arrest of parents of yahoo yahoo boys, with searchlight beam on suspected “Association of Yahoo Mother’s”, who encourage their children in the illegal internet fraud operations.
Penpushing reports that, Lawson made the call on Tuesday while speaking at the inception capacity building meeting with council of Iyalode and Iyaloja in Ogun State, with the theme, ‘Towards ending violence against women and girls’ held in Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital,and also advocated death penalty for rape convicts.
The foremost educationist expressed worry over sudden wealth of the young ones, attributed to proceeds from criminal activities from internet fraud and other social vices, which some irresponsible parents celebrate, stressing that such parents are just postponing evil days for their respective families, including the children they are encouraging and celebrating
“Another worrying situation is that a child of 20 years will be riding an exotic car worth millions of naira. And once they are arrested, their parents are ready because they have formed an association of yahoo parents. Who are they? I think the government needs to get them arrested”, she emphasised
Penpushing further reports that, Lawson, who was the first female President National Association of Chambers of Commerce Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA),stressed need for parents on need to take welfare of their children as priority, and avoid indulging them in criminal activities, and checkmate them against other social vices.
The Iyalode in similar vein, frowned at maltreatment and violence against women, and equally encouraged women to be proactive in supporting their husbands, for the betterment of their various family and society at large
Penpushing also reports that, the Executive Director, Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), Dr. Abiola Akioyode-Afolabi earlier in her welcome address pointed out that, the capacity building for the women was in collaboration with the Ford Foundation in implementing Solidarity, Accountability and Commitment to ending violence against women and girls in the 6 South West.
The Director added that it aimed to build community level accountability mechanism at addressing gender-based violence, stressing that violence against women is a violation of human rights and a major impediment to achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women in the country.
“The project therefore through innovative ways supports action that can contribute raising women and girls voices and addressing the limitations imposed on them by violence in their target communities by promoting the meaningful involvement of traditional leaders including conceptualizing and implementing projects in their communities to address violence against women”, she said
Penpushing reports that the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Melutia Ogunremi observed high rate of gender based violence in the state, but explained that the state government has been sentisizing the citizens to stop the culture of silence and resilience but to speak out.
“On a daily basis, the Ministry receive not less than 20 reports of sexual violence mostly intimate partner violence, neglect and forced economy dependency . However, I wish to reiterate the fact that the Ogun State government has zero tolerance to sexual and gender based violence and that be proven by with the inauguration of Violence Against Person Management Committee in the year 2020.
