I AM SATISFIED WITH CONDUCT OF GOVERNORSHIP, ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS-AMOSUN

His words,‘I thank God and I want to say congratulations to all of us in Ogun State. So far so good, the exercise has been very peaceful, the report I am getting is that the turnout is slightly impressive. It is better than what happened the last we voted and I pray that everything will be like this throughout the period of voting, throughout the period sorting and counting and throughout the period of collating and ultimately the result will be announced’.

‘ Honestly from what I could see, where I have voted, I think, the exercise is relatively okay, you have seen also everything was peaceful, seamless indeed even INEC did better this time, the time it takes now to vote has been reduced unlike that last time that I was here for about 45 minutes. Today it was faster, so it tells you that there is what we call the learning curve and I think that has played a positive role’.

Penpushing further reports that, Amosun while speaking about Nigeria’s democracy said, there  is still a lot more room for improvement, ‘a scenario where we have maybe sixty something, seventy something parties, when you listen to what is happening in other climes,  the election result was announced within maybe five six hours’

‘The reason is this, maybe maximum five parties but in a scenario where we have seventy something parties, it is a lot of efforts that the INEC people, the umpires will have to put in. Look at the long ballot papers that were given, imagine if you have just five parties’.

‘So I want to canvass and fortunately I’m going back to the Senate to say that we should find a way to reduce the number of political parties. The last time, I think about sixty political parties or thereabouts did not even poll one million votes,  so clearly, I think we should do something about that’.

‘I recommend maximum of six parties because we have six political votes but I think a party that will win must be a party that is multi-plural that will have presence in all political zones. But having eighty, ninety political parties is bringing a lot of stress on the part of the INEC, on the part of the electorate and on the part of everybody even in terms of finances; funding elections. Imagine what they went through. So I think there should be need for improvement, I as a person will want to canvass for that, that we should reduce it to maximum of six political parties’.
