Hoodlums set two council secretariats ablaze in Rivers state
Suspected political thugs on Monday set ablaze local council secretariats in Ikwerre and Eleme in Rivers State a few hours after the police announced the unsealing of the secretariats of the 23 local government areas of the state.
Penpushing reports that sources said the attack on the two secretariats occurred almost simultaneously, while preparation was said to be ongoing towards resumption to offices by the new chairmen elected on Saturday in the state.
The local government election was said to have placed Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State in a vantage position politically over his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike said to be at logger head with the sitting Governor.
Penpushing further reports that circulating videos and photos on social media showed thick smoke coming out of the secretariats’ buildings, while as at the time of filing this report the Rivers State government was yet to make any official statement on the ugly development
The Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko, it is recalled earlier in a statement announced that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun ordered withdrawal of policemen from the secretariats.
Penpushing also reports that the police spokesperson in the statement, however, declared that police operatives would be redeployed to the local government areas if there was another crisis or breakdown of law and order.
