Obasanjo Presidential Library threatens Anti-Crimes Commission with legal action over invasion of facility, seeks N3.5billion compensation
The management of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta has threatened to pursue every legal avenue against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following invasion of the facility to arrest suspected internet fraudsters as claimed by the authority.
Penpushing reports that Managing Director of the facility, Vitalis Ortese made this known at a press conference on Wednesday at the conference room of the library in Abeokuta, pointing out that seven days ultimatum will be given to the agency to tender apology over gestapo style of operations carried out at the premises on August 9 and 10,2025.
‘The management of OOPL is determined to pursue every legal avenue to ensure this never happens again. We have engaged legal counsel, security experts, and civil society partners to demand accountability, enforce institutional respect, and protect the rights of our patrons and staff’, Ortese stated.
Penpushing further reports that the management presented shell of bullets recovered after the operations, pointed out that the acts are not only aggravated, but unconstitutional, oppressive, capricious and arbitrary.
‘The actions are also clearly actuated by the malice against the institution of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and also of its Chief Promoter HE Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, who was Head of State (1976-1979) and President of Nigeria (1999-2007)’ he emphasized
‘We therefore demand a comprehensive investigation be undertaken by all relevant security agencies with their reports openly published, especially regarding the brutalization of our patrons being citizens who had apparently done nothing wrong nor apparently infracted any law other than engaging in a party as allowed under the law’
Penpushing also reports that Ortese stated that it was ridiculous that notorious operation was carried out where the former President, his family, several of his close friends and associates reside
‘Both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) are jointly and severally liable for the deliberate embarrassing and utterly malicious damage occasioned by their invasion of the 9th and 10th August, 2025’
Penpushing reports that the management called for immediate restitution for the damaged caused by agency, to those persons who were arrested and whose vehicle were carted away by the invasion.
The Managing Director added that about 100 people suffered bodily injuries during the invasion and demanded that at least N1billion should be paid as resitution, as well as N2.5billion be paid in token acknowledgement and atonement for the immense damaged caused to the reputation of the facility promoter’
‘This is not about OOPL. It is about the soul of our democracy. It is about the right of every Nigerian to live, work and gather in peace. It is about restoring the dignity of our institutions and the trust of our people’, he said
‘Finally, we have further instructed our lawyers that should this demand not be met in full within the next seven (7) days from today, Wednesday, August 13, 2025, we shall have no alternative but to proceed to seek redress in a competent court of law without further recourse to the police and the EFCC, and in which case our demands will not be limited to the foregoing’, Ortese emphasized
