Nigerian artistes celebrate world theatre day, calls for peaceful co-exist in country

Nigerians artistes under the banner of League of Concerned Artistes and Artists, Ogun State branch on Monday embarked on a rally across Abeokuta, the State Capital to celebrate the World Theatre Day

Penpushing reports that the theater practitioners in their hundreds with banner and drums were seen in major parts of the town which include Kuto, Oke-Ilewo, Ibara, Omida and Panseke among others to senitize residents on the relevance of the profession in the society.

The artistes as part of activities to celebrate the day, also conducted drama sketch which focused on the ongoing cash scarcity in the country, as well as its negative effect on the citizenry, and needs for the Nigerian government to rise up to the challenges.

Penpushing further reports that in the same vein, the league called for unity and peaceful co-exist among Nigerians, emphasizing and expressing optimism that the hard time in the country would soon be a thing of the past.

The Coordinator of the group Saliu Kareem while addressing journalists at the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat at Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta, pointed out that theatre is important, which could serve as a medium through which information can be sent to society be it by government or private organisations.

“The theatre is important because it is entertaining and educative, it can be used by the government to send information to society, to let society know what is right to do. If we look at the theme for this year, it is about theatre and a culture of peace. It is important because when you look at the Nigeria situation now we need peace”, he said

Penpushing also reports that Kareem called on Nigerian government on need to support the league, noting that many of them are talented but lack support, stressing that the league is a weapon that must be used judiciously.

“Government should help us and need to know that artists, is a weapon and you must use it judiciously” Give to artists, give us a reasonably attention, many people are talented but not known”, Kareem passionately appealed
