Governor Abiodun urges unity as Ogun state honours fallen heroes
The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on Nigerians to embrace a spirit of unity and deep sober reflection in honour of the nation’s fallen heroes, whose sacrifices have kept the country’s territorial integrity intact against the rising tides of banditry and internal aggression.
Penpushing reports that Abiodun made this appeal on Friday during a special Juma’at prayer held at the Central Mosque, Kobiti, Abeokuta, to kick off the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
The Governor represented by his Deputy, Engr (Mrs.) Noimot Salako-Oyedele, emphasised that the peace being enjoyed in many parts of the country today was bought with a price by men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
“This jumaat service held was to offer prayers for the repose of the souls of the officers and soldiers that have paid the supreme price in ensuring that peace is restored in Borno, the North-East and the country at large. The Army will continue to ensure that the Boko Haram war is brought to an end so that normalcy will return to the region,” Abiodun stated.
Penpushing further reports that, the Mufasir of Egbaland, Sheikh Abdullahi Belgore, in his lecture at the service highlighted the spiritual significance of military service, and reinforced the moral obligations of leadership.
The Chief Imam of Egba Central Mosque, Sa’adallahi Bamgbola, in his remarks urged government officials to remember the temporary nature of power and the importance of resource equity.
“No Nigerian should be supposed to be suffering in the abundant resources in the nation’s domain, if it is well harnessed and shared. God is the one who has been protecting them and is with them in all operations,” Bamgbola added.
Penpushing also reports that the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Ogun State Command Maryam Adebayo, pointed out that while Remembrance Day is observed globally on November 11, Nigeria holds its ceremonies on January 15 to commemorate the end of the Civil War.
“We are remembering our fallen heroes because without the sacrifices they have made, we wouldn’t have recorded the successes made so far in the fight against insurgency,” Adebayo said.
Penpushing reports that the legion boss pleaded with the administration to improve the working conditions for those still serving the cause of veterans, stressing that the legion in the state still lag in states of the federation, and urged Ogun state government to come to their aid and provide them with official equipment and offices.
Meanwhile, the Friday Juma’at service marks the beginning of several activities leading up to the grand wreath-laying ceremony on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
