Custodian of Olumo Rock deity dies at 137

The 137 year-old custodian of the Olumo rock, in Abeokuta, Ancestress Sinatu Sanni, popularly called ‘Iya Olumo’, has been reported dead on Wednesday at her Itoko residence in the ancient town after a brief illness

Penpushing reports that, the demise of the mother goddess of the rock, was confirmed by her son, Solomon Adio, affirming that her mother was a resident  in one of the enclaves under the rock for more than 40 years where she served the diety,  believe to be living in the rock

“Mama lived in one of the enclaves under the rock for more than 40 years where she served the gods of the rock. Mama will be 138 years old by August 5. She died after a brief illness. She was the mother of the diety. We are going to miss her a lot. Mama lived her life for the rock, for the diety. She was dedicated to the gods”, the son said

Penpushing further reports that, the history of Olumo rock has it that, it was a revered mountain for the natural refuge for the Egba people during the 19th-century inter-tribal warfare, and it  is equally believed that the rock is inhabited by spirits

The rock is being worshipped by traditionalists in Egbaland, and has also turned to site attraction to toursists, who came from far and near, to feel its presence, and since the existence of the rock which number of tourists always climb to the top, there has never been a record of any casualty till date

Penpushing also reports, at every annual celebration of the popular Lisabi Day celebration, Olumo rock has been a first point of call for the Egbas ahead of the annual event, while the Paramount Ruler of the ancient town always led other indigenes there to pay homage to the dieties in the rock, before setting out for the ceremony
