Former President Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment: Protests claim 72, 1,234 arrests as at Wednesday
The violence protest which followed imprisonment of former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma as at Tuesday claimed lives of 72, with number of the deaths traced to stampedes that occurred during incidents of looting of shops.
Penpushing reports that, it is recalled that, Zuma was convicted of contempt after failing to appear before a special commission investigating corruption during his nine-year presidency, and his lawyer on Monday argued before South Africa’s Constitutional Court that the former President should have his sentence rescinded.
The Judges on the court as at the time of filing this report said they would consider the arguments and announce their decision at a later date, while the country was thereafter thrown into violence protest running to six days as at Tuesday.
Penpushing further reports that, the violence continues across the country as looters attacked shopping malls and other businesses in the nation’s industrial centre in Johannesburg and other cities.
The police as at the time of this report said, they had identified 12 people suspected of provoking the riots, adding that a total of 1,234 people had been arrested following the looting and setting ablaze shopping centres.
Penpushing also reports that, information available revealed that on Monday, 10 people were killed in a stampede during looting at a shopping centre in Soweto, while on Wednesday, more than 600 stores had been looted with products worth billions of rand damaged,
