Former Nigerian Senator, Biyi Durojaiye dies at 88 from coronavirus complications
A former Nigerian Senator in the fourth republic, Senator Biyi Durojaiye has been reported dead on Monday in Lagos State after a brief illness associated with coronavirus complications.
Penpushing reports that, the family source said, Durojaiye who was born in 1933 fell ill, and couldn’t survive the ailment which claimed his life, while as at the time of filing this report, the family was said to be meeting for the next line of action
The deceased was elected Senator for the Ogun East constituency of Ogun State at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the Alliance for Democracy (AD) platform, and took office on 29 May 1999.
Penpushing further reports that, the late Durojaiye earned a BSc (Economics) London, and an LLB, London, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1979, and was a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The late Durojaiye also graduated from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies,Kuru, and worked for 35 years in the Nigerian public sector, including 28 years as a Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) and the National Mint.
Penpushing also reports that, the deceased worked with the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve System in the United States of America (.USA) and the City University London between 1964 and 1982
The late politician was an elected member of the 1988/89 Constituent Assembly, while in 1992 he was a candidate to run for President of Nigeria on the platform of the Social Democratic Party(SDP) losing to late Chief Moshood Abiola
Penpushing reports that, in December 1996 Durojayi was arrested by the military regime of late General Sani Abacha, and was imprisoned for 560 days and mistreated while in jail, and in June 1997, a report stated he was reportedly in poor health and suffering from high blood pressure caused by his treatment.
The Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience and campaigned for his release, while he was an elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria between 1999-2003.
Penpushing further reports that, Durojaiye after taking his seat in the Senate was appointed to committees on Judiciary, Establishment (Chairman) and Special Projects, and in December 2002 he recommended a life jail-term for anyone who perpetrated election fraud.
The deceased won the Alliance for Democracy (AD) primaries to represent the party in the Ogun East constituency in the 2003 elections, although he was threatened with legal action by Chief Adamo Olayinka Yesufu, a rival for the nomination
