World Day Against Trafficking: 79-year-old traditional ruler Oba Ogunleye leads taskforce on 5-kilometers trek across Abuja

A 79-year old traditional ruler and member of the Task Forces of the National Agency for the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Oba Olufemi Ogunleye on Monday led about 500 members on a 5-kilometrers trek across Abuja metropolis.

Penpushing reports that the trek was part of activities to begin a five-day ceremony to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Person and 20th year anniversary of National Agency for   Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)

The members after the opening engaged in plenary sessions where the activities of National Agency for   Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in the last 20 years vis-a-vis the engagement of State Task Forces would be reviewed, following which a compendium of good practices of state Task Forces in combating trafficking in Persons in Nigeria will be launched.

Penpushing further reports that the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), the National Agency for the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP and other international agencies with commitment to strengthening transregional action and responses against the smudging of migrants, sponsored the events.

The Director General of National Agency for   Prevention of Traffickng in Persons (NAPTIP Professor Fatima Waziri-Azi described the ceremony as epoch and the best over time, and admonished the public to stop stigmatising the victims of human trafficking but to show them empathy so that they could be meaningfully integrated into the society.

Penpushing also reports that she remarked that the massive awareness epitomised by the track and other supportive activities were to prop up the public to collaborate with the authorities fighting the cankerworm of human trafficking and allied crimes.

The monarch who led the Ogun State Task Force and Prof Waziri-Azi, concurred on the need to engage traditional institution in Nigeria on a collaborative formula to enhance awareness and to stem the prevalent human trafficking in Nigeria.
