BEING THE WELCOME ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE CHAIRMAN, EDITORIAL BOARD OF PENPUSHING MEDIA, MRS OLUFUNKE FADUGBA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 4TH ANNIVERSARY LECTURE WITH THE THEME “SOCIAL MEDIA REGULATION: INSECURITY AND ELECTIONS ACCOUNTABILITY IN NIGERIA” HELD ON THURSDAY 21ST JULY 2022 AT THE OLUSEGUN OBASANJO PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY, ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE.
Indisputably, the Social Media has become an integral part of the human life cycle, as participation in social networking through various websites and applications allow for content creation and sharing in line with global trend.
Capitalizing on this trend, the Penpushing Media has carved a niche for itself as a multi – dimensional media organization, and a credible global news dissemination platform that is robustly nurtured on the journalistic ideology of adding value to the society through developmental journalism and providing the necessary link to bridge the information gap between the source and the receiver while ensuring prompt availability of accurate, factual and credible news across the globe.
Penpushing Media, the little seed of idea planted through the journalistic effort of a creative personage and nurtured by a potpourri of cerebral individuals, has established itself as a reliable platform to fact check ambiguous viral information meant for consumption by the audience guaranteeing accuracy.
In the bid to promote developmental journalism and fulfill its agenda setting role, the Penpushing Media has established partnerships with formidable bodies to offer continuous training and workshops for stakeholders to positively impact on the process of nation building through credible information. Prominent among the various developmental efforts of the organization is the Anniversary Lecture which we are having the 4th in the series today with a focus on “Social Media Regulation: Insecurity and Elections Accountability in Nigeria”.
Indeed, at a time like this in Nigeria, our dear country, when forces trying to pull us apart are seriously contending with those capable of uniting us and the challenges confronting our national life are daunting, the social media remains the place of succour to many information seekers, the ever available medium to willing information givers, such that the bad, the good and the ugly become occupiers of the social media space dealing in all kinds of data which in local parlance is called “clearing and forwarding, general contractors of social media contents!”
Obviously, the situation has ushered in the era of information disorder where fake news, misinformation or disinformation thrive and because the consumption of mobile social media contents has become the norm, it is becoming increasingly difficult to track the spread of false information, hence the deliberate efforts by the Penpushing Media to provide this platform for robust discourse ahead of the 2023 general elections in the Country.
Therefore, it is our strong belief that this 4th Anniversary Lecture of Penpushing Media on “Social Media Regulation: Insecurity and Elections Accountability in Nigeria” to be handled by the Regional Director for West Africa, Ford Foundation, the amiable Dr Chichi Aniagolu-Okoye and an array of distinguished keynote speakers of no mean repute that we believe, will bring their wealth of experience to bear on channeling the right path for our society in the bid to get it right, in the midst of national insecurity, instability and threatened unity.
Let me, however, conclude by appealing to all the participants in this epoch making event to regard this lecture as a national assignment, required of us, as necessary contributions to better the lot of our nation and protect the interests of the younger generation of Nigerians..
At this juncture, on behalf of the Editorial Board, the entire members and our reverred fathers and mothers, I welcome you all.
Once again, thank you and God bless you all. Amen.
(Chairman, Editorial Board)
