Flood cuts off residents of two local government areas in ogun state

The heavy downpour on Friday which caused flood across some major parts of Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital has cut off residents of two local government areas as the flood pulled down the bridge connecting the communities within the local government areas.

Penpushing reports that, the victims were residents of the Obafemi-Owode and Ewekoro local government areas, while some notable communities  affected include: Opako, Obada,Oluwagbemi, Oke-Odo, Temitope, Onireke,Shalom,Alowonle and Japo.

The investigations conducted showed that, the bridge at Opako which linked Obada in Ewekoro Local Government and Opako-Adigbe axis of Obafemi-Owode local government area was forced down by the flood, as the bridge caved in.

Penpushing further reports that, number of  motorists and residents who were returning home, had  to make a  hurry detour to avoid being swept away by the flood, following severity of the damages, which made passage herculean task.

The findings also showed that, some residents whose houses were flooded, had to leave home in a hurry, as the rampaging flood could not be control, as source informed that many of them slept outside their homes

Penpuhsing further reports that, a resident of the area identified as Victoria Olusesi while narrating her experience said, the downpour was an untold hardship, which caused series of loss to the affected communities.

The resident who is a trader added that, the trucks plying the road, was major contributing factors to the collapse of the bridge, adding that the regular passage of the trucks, had weaken the bridge strength, hence, its collapse.

Penpushing also reports that, the woman called on the state government to as a matter of urgency come to the aide of the residents of the communities, which have thousands of residents, stressing that, the route remain the only avenue for their going and coming for their daily needs and businesses.

‘ I have observed that, the heavy trucks plying the road everyday responsible for the collapse of the bridge, the regular passage of the trucks had weakened the bridge structure and strength hence, the cause of the collapse’, she emphasized.

Penpushing reports that, in similarly development numbers of motorists plying the Brewery-Olomore-Ita-Oshin axis were forced to sleep over the night on the road, following traffic logjam caused by the rain which lasted for hours.

The motorists got stuck in the traffic jam, as number of vehicles development mechanical faults, a development which made it difficult for the motorists/passengers to get to their various homes, and resigned to fate in sleeping inside their vehicles till daybreak

Penpushing reports that, one of the victims, Janet Lioghalu while narrating her experience said she spent 9 hours on the road to get to her Obada home, having left Ayetoro road, adding that usually the trip lasted for about 20minutes.

‘It was a bitter experience yesterday (Friday), the road between Brewery-Olomore- Ita-Oshin which link Obada town where I reside was total blockage as a result of the long traffic jam, caused by the heavy downpour. I left Ayetoro road at about 3,00pm, and didn’t get home until 1,00am”, she recalled
