Five feared trapped as three-storey building collapses in Abia

Five people were feared trapped inside a collapsed three-storey building which was still under construction in Umumbi, a community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.

Penpushing reports that a resident Onyeka Egbule, who is living in a building located a few miles from the said building said five people were working there on Friday when the building collapsed on them, but could not ascertain if the workers died

The collapsed building another resident identified as Jude, claimed three of the carpenters working on the building’s roof survived the collapse, but could not expatiate on the whereabouts of the survivors, as sources said the owner of the building is outside the country, who had engaged his siblings in Nigeria to supervise the project.

Penpushing further reports that there are speculations that the use of substandard building materials might have contributed to the collapse, but this claim could not be independently verified as at the time of filing this report.

The Commissioner for Information in Abia State, Okey Kalu, when contacted confirmed the development adding that rescue efforts were carried out on Friday upon receipt of information about the incident, stressing that government mobilised trucks and other equipment during the rescue operation.

Penpushing also reports that the commissioner said, he could not establish if some people lost their lives explaining that the government has ordered investigation into the incident

“We are investigating this collapse. The governor has ordered an investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the building collapse. Some persons would have been arrested by now for their role in the collapse of the building’, he said
