FAMILY OF LATE MUSICOLOGIST WHO PRODUCED YORUBA METHODOLOGY SONG ‘IWE-KIKO’ RAISES ALARM OVER COPYRIGHT
which has become a household was reproduced by one Ranti Ihimoyan who tagged it as folk song.
The former Director of Arts and Culture in Ogun State,expressed disappointment over the development,stressing that her father who was the originator of the song was not given credit after the production.
‘My father, Dayo Dedeke was a renowned musicologist who was born on the 2nd of December,1921 in Abeokuta. He was a complete artist/artiste’,she recalled.
Speaking further,Dedeke-Olanrewaju who retired as a Permanent Secretary in the state,alleged the producer had infringed upon the song,having failed to do proper research on the song before reproduction
She also corroborated the family argument with a proof that the deceased who she described as a fine artist composed ‘ Iwe Kiko’ in 1953 to commemorate the inauguration of Farmers’ Cooperative Societies in the Western Region.
She lamented that,people like Ranti Ihimoyan in collaboration with Cobhams Asuquo reproduced the song,without deeming it fit to give credit to the originator
‘No credit whatsoever is given to the composer and the work is tagged folk song by Ranti just because she is too lazy to do proper research!’,she emphasised
‘I still wonder why anyone will steal another person’s work and make money from another person ‘s sweat. Now Etisalat is using it as a ring back tune’,the bereaved daughter stressed.
However,further findings by Penpushing showed that,the ‘Iwe-Kiko’ authored by the deceased is on page 56 of his composed song in his book titled ‘Ma gbagbe’,which was published in 1963 by Loondon Oxford University Press.
The records also have it that,the late Dedeke initiated the carol service in Ogun State,and first Music Director and master ochestra. He held the two positions until his death on May 18,1994.
It was in December 1994 that,Dr Olumide Kuti took over from where Pa Dedeke stopped. He was also Music Director and Master of choristers in carol services of the Western Region,long before creating Ogun State.
The deceased,the records added was also the person who composed the Ogun State song,’Ise Ya’ in 1976 before it was adopted as the state anthem.
