Department State Security Services uncover plot to stage campaign of calumny over Emefiele’s arrest

The Department State Security Services (DSS) said it has uncovered plans for a sponsored protest of calumny against the service and Nigerian Government following suspension and investigation of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele

Penpushing reports that the spokesperson of the agency, Peter Afunanya made the disclosure in a statement, adding that part of the plot by the sponsored groups was to stage campaigns in the coming week.

The statement said the groups and persons have concluded arrangements to gather at different points in Abuja and Lagos calling for release of Emefiele with placards depicting the service and the Nigerian government in a bad light.

Penpushing further reports that the Department of State Security Service (DSS), however, warned in the statement that it will not be distracted by the cheap propaganda aimed at demotivating and distracting it from professionally executing its responsibilities.

‘It has also noted the misleading commentaries, speculative narratives, storylines and videos being circulated in the social media by uninformed parties, critics and/or desperadoes. It is mindful of orchestrations to infiltrate its fold for the purpose of using disloyal staff for subversive aims against its leadership. While these efforts are considered as hatchet jobs designed to distract, the service warns the plotters to desist forthwith from their plans’, Afunanya said.

Penpushing also reports that he emphasized that the arrowheads of the planned campaign were already under watch and would be apprehended if it becomes necessary, just as he explained that the service had granted the family of Emefiele, medical officials and appropriate persons access to him since the day he was taken in and long before the court order requesting so.

The service spokesperson explained that the Department has Standard Operating Procedures on suspect handling and investigations and complies with them, stressing that the service will continue to conduct its affairs transparently, professionally and in deference to the rule of law, in line with democratic governance.
