Court stops impeachment move against Ondo state deputy governor

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has restrained the Ondo State House of Assembly from impeaching Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa over alleged gross misconduct, and also restrained Governor Rotimi Akeredolu from nominating a new Deputy Governor.

Penpushing reports that Justice Emeka Nwite gave the ruling on Tuesday shortly after counsel to the embattled Deputy Governor, Kayode Adewusi, moved the ex-parte motion to the effect, emphasisng that the move to replace him(Aiyedatiwa) should be put on hold pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter. .

The judge having listened to the lawyer of the Deputy Governor pointed out that he was of the view that the interest of justice would be met by granting the application, and thereafter granted the application of the applicant

Penpushing further reports that Aiyedatiwa had, in a motion on notice with reference number: FHC/ABJ/CS/1294/2023, sued the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The applicant in the application dated and filed by Adelanke Akinrata on 21 September, 2023, however, in same vein sued Governor Akeredoku, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Chief Judge of Ondo State and the House of Assembly as 1st to 6th respondents respectively, and sought four reliefs.

Penpushing also reports that the court equally made an order of interim injunction restraining the Governor, his servants or privies from harassing, intimidating, embarrassing and preventing Aiyedatiwa from carrying out the functions of his office as Deputy Governor of Ondo State.

The judge after granting the prayers  adjourned the matter until 9 October for hearing, while record has it that in similar development the Deputy Governor  in another suit referenced: AK/348/2023 prayed the High Court in Akure to stop the State’s House of Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment proceedings against him pending the hearing and determination of the suit filed in the court on Monday.
