Coronavirus claims life of Major General in Nigeria
The Nigerian Army has lost one of its top officers, Major-General Olu Irefin to coronavirus, having contacted the virus at the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Penpushing reports that, the army general was a participant at the conference but suddenly fell ill and was taken to the hospital on Tuesday evening, but later tested positive for coronavirus and was receiving treatment before he died.
The military boss was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Port Harcourt in Rivers State, and until his appointment in July 2020 as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) in Port Harcourt, was the General Officer Commanding(GOC) 81 Division Nigerian Army in Lagos.
Penpushing further reports that as at the time of filing this report, the Army spokesperson, Sagir Musa, was yet to confirm the sad incident, while the authorities also kept mute on the identity of the deceased.
The Acting Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sagir Musa had earlier announced the sudden cancellation of conference, when a participating officer tested positive for the virus.
‘The Nigerian Army wishes to inform members of the public that due to resurgence of COVID 19 pandemic in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja in what appears to be a second wave of infection cycle and the unfortunate incident on Tuesday 8 December 2020, where an officer participating in the ongoing Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference 2020 here in Abuja tested positive to COVID 19, the remaining activities of the conference have therefore been immediately cancelled’, the statement said.
Penpushing further reports that, the Brigadier General in the statement disclosed that, all participants have been mandated to immediately proceed on self isolation in line with the Federal Government’s protocol for coronavirus and to prevent any further spread of the disease.
Meanwhile, the death of Major-General Irefin becomes the latest high profile casualty from coronavirus in Nigeria, a list that includes President Muhammadu Buhari’s former chief of staff, Abba Kyari.
