Coalition of Theatre Arts Associations accuses religious centres of contributing to involvement of youths in crimes
The Coalition of Theatre Arts Association, Ogun State Chapter has identified religious bodies as major contributing factors for the incessant social vices among the Nigerian youths, which include ritual killings, kidnapping, cultism, rape, drug abuse and prostitution among others.
Penpushing reports that, the body noted this in a press statement issued by Yinka Ola-Williams (Chairman) and Adesegun Adeshina(Secretary),at the end of a day sensitization walk with the theme, ’Say No To Ritual Killings and Social Vices in Ogun State’, adding that the recent ugly development in some parts of Ogun State has created fear, anxiety and emotional trauma amongst citizens.
The group emphasised that, there is no gainsaying that the religious houses are also fueling the act which has become a pandemic in recent times by celebrating success and not minding the sources of the wealth of such individual.
‘Most of our religious houses no longer preach repentance, salvation and life after death. Rather, our religious houses now focus on prosperity, success, and breakthrough’, the statement noted.
Penpushing further reports that, the coalition in the same vein, pointed out that bad parenting was another factor, stating that, through proper planning, parents are to give birth to a certain number of children they would be able to cater for and nurture in terms of providing their basic needs and giving them quality education or vocation
‘As a Coalition, our research and findings have shown that most youths engage in social vices as a result of the following; lack of parental care, norms and values of our culture, religion and tradition, broken homes, poverty, peer pressure, unemployment, get rich quick syndrome, economic recession and pressure from the society’, the statement added.
Penpushing also reports that, the body noted that, on the other hand, the harsh economic reality of our country, poverty coupled with mass unemployment are also major drivers of the act and which its adverse effect is what we’re seeing in our various environment and reading on pages of dailies and online.
The coalition, however, proposed solutions to the ugly development calling on government to create an enabling environment for small and medium scale businesses to thrive, parents should be more dedicated to training and mentoring their children.
Penpushing reports that, other proposals are that, morals should be taught in religious centers and schools, cultural values and norms should be instilled in the youths, provision of guidance counseling and career talks in Schools, return of discipline and non- corporal punishment into public and private schools, movies should be well screened by the authorized body and general public should be well educated on the categories of movies
