Buhari dissolves University of Lagos governing council, reinstates Ogundipe as Vice Chancellor

President Muhammadu Buhari has dissolved the Governing Council of University of Lagos, formerly chaired by Dr Wale Babalakin and reinstated the embattled Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, who was suspended in August.

Penpushing reports that, this development was contained in a statement the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Gooong, stating that the President hopes these steps will bring peace, stability, focus and direction to the university.

The statement said the President noted that the initial removal of Ogundipe as the Vice Chancellor of the University by the governing council did not follow due process, having not being allowed to defend himself on the allegations upon which his removal was based. .

“The Vice-Chancellor was not granted an opportunity to defend himself on the allegations upon which his removal was based. He should accordingly be re-instated,” the statement said.

Penpushing further reports that, the President said all allegations made against the Vice-Chancellor and the management of the university before and after the constitution of the Special Visitation Panel should be referred to the regular Visitation Panel for a thorough investigation and necessary recommendations.

The statement noted that the process adopted by the council in appointing Prof Omololu Soyombo to take over after the purported sack of Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe as the Vice Chancellor of the University was against the law

“The process adopted by the Council in the appointment of Omololu Soyombo as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University was inconsistent with the provisions of the Law relating to the appointment of an Acting Vice-Chancellor. The Governing Council should be dissolved,” he said.

Penpushing reports that power tussle between Dr Wale Babalakin, then the Chairman of the Governing Council and the embattled Oluwatoyin Ogundipe over allegation of financial misconduct torn the university apart

The crisis reached its peak in March when the 2020 convocation, which had earlier been scheduled for March 9 to 12, was suspended, and following this ugly development, the President, thereafter, appointed a seven-member committee to investigate the controversies in the school.
