Canadian university changes name over protest against founder

Ryerson University, Toronto in Canada  has changed its name  due to alleged atrocities, including discrimination, ties to residential schools, colonialism and slavery allegedly involved by the founder, Egerton Ryerson, in the past .
Penpushing reports exclusively  that the President and Vice Chancellor, Mohammed Lachemi who made this known through alumni association contacts disclosed that the university will henceforth be known as  Toronto Metropolitan University, Toronto.
The  Vice-Chancellor in the memo sent to alumnus of the university, a Master’s degree graduate of Media Production, Chief Olufemi  Shodunke said the change of name was historical,as the first to embrace a change of this scale, explaining that this important change has come as a result of a suite of recommendations presented by the Standing Strong Task Force
I am reaching out to you to share exciting news for our community – effective today, we will now be known as Toronto Metropolitan University. As graduate of this institution, you are a valued member of our community” he said in the memo to alumnus of the institution.
“You have a lifelong connection that I hope includes meaningful memories and relationships that you continue to carry with you. This is a historic moment – we are the first university in Canada to embrace a change of this scale and I hope you are proud to be a member of a community that takes reconciliation, inclusion and diversity as seriously as we do”,Lachemi wrote.

“As you likely know, this important change has come as a result of a suite of recommendations presented by the Standing Strong Task Force. I assembled this group in November 2020, to develop principles to guide commemoration at the university and to respond to the history and legacy of Egerton Ryerson within the context of the university’s values”‘ he added.

“In August 2021, they presented 22 recommendations, including the recommendation that we rename our institution. Our board of governors approved all recommendations and the university is committed to implementing them”, he emphasised.

“Over the past six months, the University Renaming Advisory Committee has led a robust and consultative process to define a short list of names that reflect our values and aspirations as a community. The Committee heard from 30,000 people and reviewed over 2,600 names. It is their work that has resulted in our new name – and I am so grateful to them for taking on this important task”, he explained.

“Our new name is not about changing or erasing the past, it is about finding a name that can unify all of our community members – students, faculty, staff and alumni. For those of you that participated in the renaming process by sharing your perspectives and feedback, thank you”.
