Babangida’s autobiography: My late father was an object of envy, says abacha’s son

The son of late former Nigerian dictator, General Sani Abacha, Sadiq Abacha has explained that his late father was the subject of envy from those trying to portray him as a bad leader, adding that they had aspired to be like him in their later life career.

Penpushing reports that he stated this in a subtle reaction to former Military Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida’s book: A Journey in Service’, emphasizing that his deceased father was a leader whose legacy remains strong despite continued criticism.

The book authored by Babangida had blamed the late Abacha for the annulment of the 1993 presidential election and accused him of plotting to violently overthrow his government, while he was in office as military head of state.

Penpushing further reports that the Abacha junior, however, in a short message on Facebook, praised his late father, and adding that history would judge him as a better leader.

“The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down. As a son, I am most proud of you today. You indeed are the man they wish they were half of’, he wrote.

Penpushing also reports that the late Abacha who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998, remains a polarising figure in the country’s history, but his son comment came days after Babangida expressed regret over the annulment of the 12 June 1993 presidential election, 32 years after the event.

The former military dictator in the book presented to the public on Thursday, which chronicles his (Babangida’s) experiences, decisions, and challenges in national service blamed Abacha and other military officers for annulling the election.

Penpushing reports that Babangida in the 420-page memoir, acknowledged that the 1993 election was credible, free and fair and was won by late Chief Moshood Abiola who was the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The former ruler in the autobiography stated that while he regretted the annulment decision, said the move was ultimately driven by internal forces led by Abacha, allegedly without his prior knowledge.
